The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Student Representative Council (SRC) has transitioned to new leadership, marking the official handover from the 64th Council to the 65th for the 2025/2026 academic year.
The ceremony also featured the unveiling of a revised SRC Constitution aimed at strengthening governance, inclusion, and accountability within student leadership.
Speaking at the event, the Director of the Directorate of Student Affairs, Professor Marian Asantewah Nkansah, reaffirmed the directorate’s commitment to guiding and supporting the new SRC executives.
“We will guide your mission, your passion, and your goodwill so that you can help shape the KNUST Student Representative Council for future positive impact,” she said.
Prof. Nkansah commended the outgoing SRC leadership for their dedication to student welfare and service.
“I would like to commend the outgoing SRC leadership for your commitment to advocating for student welfare and for the successes you have achieved the interventions you made, the initiatives you started and completed, and all the programmes you led to accomplishment,” she said.
She also advised the new leaders to remain open to counsel and responsive to change.
“If you don’t remember anything at all, remember this: make yourself amenable to advice and responsive to change,” she added.
Newly elected SRC President Shakir Is-had Waiz expressed gratitude to his supporters and pledged to serve diligently.
Other executives sworn into office included Justice Atuahene Frimpong as Vice President, Fredericka Naa Asheley Ollennu as Judicial Chairperson, Mavis Aning as Women’s Commissioner, Woelinam Kekeli Atsu Kunudzro as General Secretary, and Nutassey Beckley Hezekiah as Financial Secretary.
The revised constitution, adopted following petitions to the SRC Judicial Council, introduces several reforms. Key amendments include the swearing-in of newly elected members within five weeks after vacation, direct representation for students with disabilities on the SRC Council, and public vetting of the Judicial Chairperson and Speaker to enhance transparency and accountability.
It also establishes permanent electronic platforms for official publications, adds the Electoral Commissioner as a member of the SRC Electoral Commission, and includes a dedicated chapter outlining the rights and responsibilities of students.
